How to create an API token at Fio banka

In Fio internet banking, click Settings at the top right, open the API tab and create a token. For bookkeeping software the “Account monitoring” permission is enough. You confirm the request by SMS or push notification, and the token works 5 minutes later. It is valid for at most 180 days; with automatic renewal it is extended at every login.

5 steps

How it works

  1. Sign in to internet banking

The account owner, or a person with rights to the account, creates the token in their own Fio internet banking.

  2. Settings → the API tab

Click “Nastavení” (Settings) at the top right and open the “API” tab on the Settings screen. Tokens are created and revoked there.

  3. Choose the permission and validity

To download payments, choose “Sledování účtu” (account monitoring). Set the validity (180 days at most) and turn on automatic renewal so the token doesn't expire.

  4. Confirm by SMS or push

Creating a token needs strong authorization. If several people sign for the account, all of them must sign the token. The token then appears in the list.

  5. Use it after 5 minutes

The token is a 64-character string. It starts working in the API 5 minutes after authorization; then paste it into your bookkeeping software, Zettl for example.

Good to know

  • A token covers one account only. Create two tokens for a CZK and a EUR account.
  • Fio won't create a token without a validity period or with one longer than 180 days. With automatic renewal, every login to Internetbanking or Smartbanking resets the validity to 180 days from that day.
  • Without further authorization the API only releases the last 90 days. Unlock older data on the same API tab with the lock icon next to the token; after authorization they are available for 10 minutes.
  • At least 30 seconds must pass between two calls with the same token. Otherwise Fio answers 409 Conflict.
  • A 500 Internal Server Error from the Fio API means the token doesn't exist or is inactive, typically expired. Create a new one and replace it in your software.
  • A token is sensitive: whoever has it can see the account's movements. Give the right to send payments only to software that really sends payments.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on this topic.

Where is the API token in Fio internet banking?

Under the “Nastavení” (Settings) button at the top right, on the “API” tab. That's where you create, list and revoke tokens.

Which permission should a token for bookkeeping software have?

“Sledování účtu” (account monitoring): the token only downloads data from the bank. The other option, account monitoring plus payment and direct debit orders, can also send payments, and bookkeeping software doesn't need it to download payments.

How long is a Fio API token valid?

At most 180 days; you choose the validity when you create it. With automatic renewal on, every login to Internetbanking or Smartbanking extends it to 180 days from that day.

Why doesn't a new token work straight away?

Fio lets it into the API only 5 minutes after successful authorization. If several people sign for the account, all of them must sign the token first.

What do errors 500 and 409 from the Fio API mean?

500 means the token doesn't exist or is inactive, most often expired: create a new one. 409 means less than 30 seconds have passed since the last call with the same token: just wait a moment.

How do I download movements older than 90 days through the API?

On the API tab, click the lock icon next to the token and authorize the request. The full history is then available for 10 minutes. In Zettl you can also upload older movements as a GPC statement.

Does Zettl notice when a token is about to expire?

Yes. Fio's API doesn't say when a token expires, so Zettl counts the token's age from when it was saved and warns after 165 days. It also warns when Fio has refused the token for over a day. Either way it shows in the app, with one e-mail to the company's owners and admins.

Let your payments match themselves
